Home security: Not just about burglars anymore

Why we prep

Here’s another reason why you – and your friends and family – should prep:

And on, and on, and on …

It’s way too easy to compile a daily list of civilization’s end times in the land of E pluribus unum. Not to sound too curmudgeonly, but back in my day, Anderson Cooper would be shamed out of his job as a major news anchor and any threat to my family by rabid Sorocrats would have been countered with a baseball bat … handed to me by my local sheriff’s deputy.

There’s a famous quote out there that goes, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

But there are other conditions ancillary to Mr. Burke’s maxim that lead to the same result. One of them is when there are too few “good men” to make a difference. Government school, government churches, government media … all have spent the last 100 years teaching and preaching that God is either dead or on vacation, that desires equate to facts, and that the ends justify the means.

The greatest threat to Western Civilization – the high point of human development to date – isn’t EMPs or a pandemic. It’s not a Yellowstone eruption or a solar flare. It’s the denial of the Word and the elevation of the seven deadly sins to a lifestyle menu. “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” (Mark 3:25)

The chasm is growing and the foundation is crumbling.

And that’s one of the reasons we prep.

The mailbox

So I checked out the comments on last week’s column. A lot of them were pretty good. A few of the expected “We’re all going to die” types, but one comment in particular caught my eye:

In our neck of the woods, local and state police/sheriff officials refuse to uphold state trespass laws. Private land is now pretty much considered open to the public provided they do not commit any other crime while on the property. Unfortunately, the land owner remains liable for any and all injuries incurred to others while on the property. Property owners are not allowed to use any means of force, including weapons, to force trespassers off the property. Times sure have changed and not for the better. …

Absolutely right, apropos to the “Why we prep” above – and a good intro to the next couple of weeks’ worth of columns which will focus on home security in an increasingly immoral world.

The concept of property is a big deal. The true ownership of anything isn’t defined by who paid for it or who possesses it. It’s based solely on who has control of the thing. Don’t get that? Try skipping out on your property taxes for a while and you’ll quickly find out who really “owns” your home.

Back in October of last year I wrote a piece on ways to protect your valuables from burglars.

The basic concept behind that article was how to hide your valuables well enough that the search time wasn’t worth the “in-house” time. But that system falls apart if the criminals not only have control of your home, but also have you or your loved ones as hostages to your goods. There’s been an increase in home invasion crimes over the past years, probably because threatening or actually breaking a few bones cuts way down on the time needed to search for your valuables.

Is prepping the right thing for to do for Christians? Or should we just be trusting in the Lord? Learn about that balance in “Be Thou Prepared” by Carl Gallups – “Equipping the Church for Persecution and Times of Trouble.”

Now there are all kinds of articles on the web that will tell you to leave your outside lights on or put up “Beware of dog” signs or always keep your doors locked at all times. I’m sure this is good advice for the run-of-the-mill smash-and-grab type of housebreaker. But the kind of home invasions I’ll be covering is what I believe, sooner or later, will become the norm: the organized assault on those who present the appearance of being affluent in terms of self-dependency.

In our developing new world order, arranging a riot for political advantage is now as easy as posting a few tweets. A real cause is secondary or even unnecessary.

Read the above article from the LA Times. It contains lines such as “It evokes some unfelt anger that hasn’t been tapped into” and “They blame something, they don’t know what it is exactly” and “They can’t express it, so they just go out. A lot of people are doing it to be a part of something” scattered throughout the piece.

Rioting is nothing new. But whole groups of people are now being paid and trained in the mechanics of violent disobedience. And very soon, some of these mob-managers will decide to branch out to where the real money is – taking the “struggle” to the homes of the oppressors.

So starting next week, we’ll spend some time on making your compound, bug-out, home, condo or apartment as rabble-resistant as possible. We’ll cover this subject from the outside in. There’s a lot that can be done to discourage attacks on your domicile, and a lot of these strategies can be put in place for very little money (though a few can break the bank, so work the security vs. cost balance carefully). There are a lot of great (and not-so-great) writings on the topic of home security, and I’ll be reviewing some of them for you.

Well-trained and equipped homebreakers can be a prepper’s worst nightmare in many ways. But bear this in mind: unlike drugged-out punks or drive-by thrill seekers, the professional raider will be considering the profit-and-loss, risk-versus-reward bottom line. If you make your nut too costly to crack, the gang will move on to a less-robust venue.

The time to start shoring up the walls of your castle is now. Right now. Don’t be like my Cousin Sam from last week’s column. The world economy is on a knife-edge. It’s far past repairable. When God is needed the most, it’s become trendy to go without God. And since morality comes from God, moral living is impossible without Him.

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. (Romans 8:12-13)

Until next week, keep the faith. And get prepared.
